Leading the quintet through the songs is saxophonist and sax teacher Berry Goddard. Influenced by sax legends such as Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman and Maceo Parker, Berry adds a funky vibe to her music, taking the music to a younger audience while still hitting those jazz notes.

Completing the horn section is Dan Reid on trumpet, a fine soloist in his own right who completed his jazz degree in 2005. His playing complements the sax by adding harmonies at the perfect point, or by taking the music in a different direction on the solos. More of a straight-ahead jazzer, Dan’s playing is always fresh, soulful and inventive.

In between the rhythm section and the horns we have JD on guitar. Despite growing up on a diet of G’n’R, JD made the break into jazz a few years ago from discovering guitarists like Joe Pass, Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. Breaking free from the generation of widdle-tastic guitarists JD hits those dirty jazz chords at the right moment to add tension or sits right in the groove for the funky sounds.

The backbone of the group is Tom Woodworth on bass. Almost from birth Tom was exposed to huge range of music. Taking on board a combination of music from Metallica, the Chili peppers, Little Feat, Mingus and Monk it’s no wonder that his playing can take a new turn at any moment.

No ordinary drummer could complete this line up, but Mark Whitlam takes on the task with ease. A classical percussionist, kit and keys player Mark uses his undoubted technique with intense feeling. Solid on the beat whether swinging or hitting the funkier spots, and when on a solo you’ll notice the crowd all sit-up and take notice of his playing.
